About Text Diff

Spotting the difference between two versions of a contract, an essay, a config file or some code by eye is slow and error-prone. Paste the original on the left and the changed version on the right, or open files, and every added and removed line is highlighted with its line numbers. You can ignore differences in letter case or spacing, and show only the changes with a few lines of context. Download the result as a standard .diff file. It's free and quick.

How to Use It

  1. 01

    Add the original

Paste the original text into the left box, or open a file.

  2. 02

    Add the changed version

Paste the new version into the right box.

  3. 03

    Review the changes

Added lines are green and removed lines are red. Download the .diff if needed.

Questions

How does the comparison work?

It compares line by line using the Myers diff algorithm, the same approach Git uses, to find the smallest set of added and removed lines.

Can I ignore whitespace?

Yes. Tick Ignore spacing differences to treat lines that differ only in spaces or tabs as the same.

Can I compare two files that aren't text?

For images, PDFs and other binary files, use Compare Two Files, which checks whether they are identical byte by byte.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The comparison runs in your browser.
