About BAT Files
A BAT file is a list of Command Prompt commands that Windows runs in order when you double-click it. Batch files automate jobs such as copying files, starting programs or changing settings. They are plain text, but double-clicking runs them immediately, so they can be dangerous if they come from an unknown source. Files with the .cmd extension work the same way.
How to Open a BAT File
- Windows
- Right-click and choose Edit (or Show more options, then Edit) to read it in Notepad. Double-click only if you trust it.
- Mac & Linux
- Open it in a text editor; batch files don't run there.
BAT File Questions
Is a BAT file a virus?
Not by itself, but a malicious batch file can delete files or download malware. Read it before running it.
How do I run a BAT file as administrator?
Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
