About EXE Files
An EXE file is a program that runs on Windows. Installers, games and apps are usually EXE files. Double-clicking one runs it with your permissions, which is why malware often hides in EXE files, sometimes with names like invoice.pdf.exe. Only run EXE files from developers you trust, and keep file extensions visible so you can spot fake ones. EXE files don't run on Macs, iPhones or Android.
How to Open an EXE File
- Windows
- Double-click to run it. Windows may warn you if the program isn't signed.
- Mac & Linux
- EXE files don't run natively. Wine, CrossOver or a Windows virtual machine can run some.
