About Encrypt File

Emailing a tax return, keeping scans of your passport in cloud storage, or handing over a USB stick? Encrypt the files first, so they're useless to anyone without the password. This tool uses AES-256 in GCM mode, the same encryption used by banks and messaging apps, with a key derived from your password by PBKDF2 with 600,000 rounds to slow down guessing. Any file type works, and large files are processed in chunks with an integrity check on each, so tampering is detected. The original file name is stored inside the encrypted file and restored when you decrypt it.

How to Use It

  1. 01

    Add files

Drop one or more files of any type into the box.

  2. 02

    Choose a password

Type a strong password twice. Write it down somewhere safe; it can't be recovered.

  3. 03

    Download

Press Encrypt and save the .enc files. Decrypt them later with Decrypt File.

Questions

How strong is the encryption?

AES-256-GCM is a modern, widely trusted standard. In practice, the strength depends on your password: use a long one, such as four or five random words.

What if I forget the password?

The file can't be recovered. There is no back door and no reset, which is the point of encryption.

How do I decrypt the file?

Open the Decrypt File tool on this site, add the .enc file and enter the password. It works offline once the page has loaded.

Is the file name hidden too?

The original name is stored inside the encrypted data. The .enc file itself keeps the name plus .enc, so rename it if the name is sensitive.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Files and passwords stay in your browser.
