About Blank Text File
Creating a truly empty file is surprisingly awkward on phones and some computers. This tool makes a blank text file in one tap. By default it is a plain UTF-8 file of exactly zero bytes, which is what most apps expect. If you need a byte order mark so a program detects the encoding, choose UTF-8 with BOM or UTF-16 little-endian. You can also change the extension to make an empty .md, .log, .env, .gitkeep or any other plain-text file. The file is created and downloaded directly.
How to Use It
- 01
Pick an encoding
Keep UTF-8 for a 0-byte file, or add a BOM if a program needs one.
- 02
Set the extension
Leave txt, or type another extension such as md, log or env.
- 03
Create and download
Press Create File and download the empty file.
Questions
Is the file really 0 bytes?
Yes, with the default UTF-8 option. The BOM options add 3 bytes (UTF-8) or 2 bytes (UTF-16) at the start so programs can detect the encoding.
What is a BOM and do I need one?
A byte order mark is a short invisible marker at the start of a text file. Most apps don't need it, but some older Windows programs use it to pick the right encoding.
Can I make an empty file without an extension?
Browsers need an extension to save the download properly. Rename the file afterwards if you need one without an extension.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The file is created in your browser.
