About
TheFilesGuy is a set of free file tools that run entirely in your web browser: converters, compressors, PDF tools and generators for blank and test files. When you work with a photo, PDF or audio file here, the work happens on your phone or computer. The file is never uploaded.
Why in the browser?
Most online converters upload your file to a server, convert it there, and send it back. That means waiting for uploads, size limits, queues on busy days, and trusting a stranger with your documents. Modern browsers are capable enough to do many conversions themselves, so we let them.
How it works
- Images are decoded and re-encoded with the browser's built-in canvas. HEIC files use the open-source heic2any decoder when the browser can't read them natively.
- PDFs are built and edited with pdf-lib and rendered to images with Mozilla's PDF.js. Password protection and unlocking use QPDF, compiled to WebAssembly so it runs in your browser.
- Blank Office files (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) are assembled from the open Office Open XML format directly on your device.
- Audio is decoded by the browser's Web Audio API and encoded to MP3 with lamejs, a JavaScript port of the LAME encoder.
- ZIP downloads are created on your device with fflate.
What it can't do (yet)
Some conversions, such as PDF to Word or video conversion, need either a server or very large engines that would make pages slow. We only list converters that work fully offline in your browser.
