About PS1 Files
A .ps1 file contains PowerShell commands used to automate Windows administration, from installing software to managing users. Windows doesn't run PS1 files by double-clicking; by default it opens them in Notepad, and the execution policy may block unsigned scripts. That's a safety feature, because scripts can change anything you have access to.
How to Open a PS1 File
- Windows
- Right-click and choose Run with PowerShell, or run .\file.ps1 in a PowerShell window. Read it in Notepad first.
- Mac & Linux
- Install PowerShell 7 and run pwsh file.ps1.
PS1 File Questions
Why is running scripts disabled on my system?
Windows' execution policy blocks unsigned scripts. You can allow scripts for your user with Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned -Scope CurrentUser, if you understand the risk.
Is it safe to run a PS1 file from the internet?
Only after reading it and trusting its source.
