About WOFF Files
WOFF wraps a TrueType or OpenType font with compression so it downloads faster on websites. Every browser supports it. WOFF2, its successor, compresses about 30 percent better and is now preferred, but WOFF is still used as a fallback for very old browsers. WOFF files are meant for the web, so desktop apps usually can't install them.
How to Open a WOFF File
- Any device
- Use it in a website's CSS with @font-face.
- Windows & Mac
- Convert it to TTF or OTF with a font tool such as FontForge to install it on your computer.
WOFF File Questions
Can I install a WOFF font on my computer?
Not directly. Convert it to TTF or OTF first, and check that the licence allows desktop use.
Do I still need WOFF?
Rarely. All current browsers support WOFF2, which is smaller.
