About PPT Files
PPT was PowerPoint's default format until PowerPoint 2007 introduced PPTX. It is a binary format, and old PPT presentations are still common in archives, schools and businesses. Current versions of PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Slides and LibreOffice Impress open them, although animations and embedded media from very old files may not play correctly. Saving as PPTX usually makes the file smaller.
How to Open a PPT File
- Windows & Mac
- Open it in PowerPoint, Keynote, LibreOffice Impress or WPS Office.
- Any device
- Upload it to Google Drive and open it with Google Slides.
PPT File Questions
How do I convert PPT to PPTX?
Open it in PowerPoint and choose File, Info, Convert, or File, Save As, PowerPoint Presentation.
Why are videos missing from my old PPT?
Old PPT files often link to video files instead of embedding them. The videos need to be in the same folder as the presentation.
