About DNG Files

DNG is a RAW image format: it stores the unprocessed data from a camera sensor, so you can adjust exposure, white balance and colour later with far more room than a JPG allows. Adobe published it as an open alternative to the many proprietary RAW formats from camera makers. Some cameras and phones save DNG directly, including iPhones when shooting Apple ProRAW and many Android phones in pro mode. Lightroom can also convert other RAW files to DNG for archiving.

How to Open a DNG File

Windows
The Photos app shows DNG files. Edit them in Lightroom
Mac
Preview and Photos open DNG files.
iPhone & Android
The Photos app opens ProRAW DNGs; Lightroom Mobile and Snapseed can edit them.

DNG File Questions

Why are DNG files so big?

They hold the full sensor data, often 12 to 14 bits per channel, instead of a compressed 8-bit image. Expect 20 to 80 MB per photo.

Should I convert my RAW files to DNG?

It can make archiving simpler with one open format, but keep the originals if your camera maker's software gives better results with them.
