About NEF Files
NEF is the RAW format Nikon cameras use. Like other RAW files, it keeps the full sensor data and the camera's settings without applying the processing that produces a JPG, giving you much more freedom to correct exposure, white balance and colour afterwards. NEF files are large and need a RAW-capable editor to develop. Nikon's own free app, NX Studio, opens them, as do most major photo editors.
How to Open an NEF File
- Windows
- Install the Raw Image Extension from the Microsoft Store, or use Nikon NX Studio, Lightroom or darktable.
- Mac
- Preview and Photos open NEF files.
- iPhone & Android
- Lightroom Mobile and Snapseed open NEF files.
NEF File Questions
Can I edit NEF files for free?
Yes. Nikon NX Studio, darktable and RawTherapee are free and handle NEF files.
Why does my NEF look different in Lightroom than on the camera?
The camera's screen shows the JPG preview with Nikon's picture style applied. Lightroom applies its own default processing until you adjust it or choose a camera profile.
