MP4 vs MOV
MOV is Apple’s video format, MP4 is the universal one. They’re closer than you might think.
| Feature | MP4 | MOV |
|---|---|---|
| Developed by | MPEG (based on QuickTime) | Apple |
| Common video codecs | H.264, HEVC, AV1 | H.264, HEVC, ProRes |
| Quality | Depends on codec | Depends on codec |
| Websites and social media | Universal | Usually accepted |
| Windows and Android | Plays everywhere | Mostly, HEVC may need codecs |
| Professional editing | Delivery format | Common for editing (ProRes) |
The same family
MP4 was standardised in 2001 using Apple's QuickTime file format as its foundation, so MP4 and MOV are built almost identically. Both are containers, wrappers that hold video, audio, subtitles and metadata. What determines quality and size is the codec inside, not the container.
An iPhone video recorded in HEVC looks exactly the same whether it's saved as .mov or .mp4. That's why converting between the two is often possible without re-encoding at all; tools like FFmpeg can simply copy the streams into the new container in seconds.
Compatibility
MP4 is the format of the web. Every browser, phone, smart TV, video platform and editing app supports it. MOV is fully supported on Apple devices and plays on Windows in Media Player and VLC, but some websites, Android apps and older TVs are pickier about it.
Most compatibility problems blamed on MOV are really about HEVC. iPhones record in HEVC by default, and older Windows PCs need the HEVC Video Extensions to play it. Switching the iPhone camera to Most Compatible records H.264, which plays everywhere.
Professional use
MOV is common in professional video because it's the standard home for Apple ProRes, an editing codec that keeps high quality and is easy for editing software to scrub through. Cameras, screen recorders and editing suites often produce ProRes MOV files, which are very large. MP4 is typically the delivery format at the end of the process.
Should you convert MOV to MP4?
If a website, app or person can't play your MOV, converting to MP4 fixes it. If the video is H.264 or HEVC, the conversion can be lossless; if it's ProRes, it will need to be re-encoded, which makes the file much smaller but slightly lower in quality.

Questions
Is MOV better quality than MP4?
No. Quality depends on the codec inside, and both can hold the same codecs.
Can I change MOV to MP4 by renaming?
Sometimes it plays, because the formats are so similar, but it's better to remux with a tool such as FFmpeg or HandBrake.
Why are my iPhone videos MOV?
Apple uses its QuickTime format. Shared videos are often converted to MP4 automatically.
Does YouTube accept MOV?
Yes. YouTube accepts both MOV and MP4.
