FLAC vs MP3

FLAC keeps the exact sound of the original; MP3 makes it much smaller. Whether you’ll hear the difference depends on your ears and gear.

Lossless versus lossy

FLAC works like a ZIP file for audio. It finds redundancy in the samples and stores them more compactly, typically shrinking a WAV to 50 to 70 percent of its size. When played, it decodes back to exactly the original samples, so nothing is lost.

MP3 discards information it judges inaudible, based on how human hearing works. The data is gone for good, and converting the MP3 to another lossy format later loses a little more.

Can you hear the difference?

In controlled blind tests, most listeners cannot reliably tell a 320 kbps MP3 from the lossless original, even on good equipment. Some people can pick out differences on certain tracks, such as cymbals, applause or reverb tails, especially at lower bitrates like 128 kbps.

Your playback chain matters more than the file format. Bluetooth headphones re-compress audio anyway, so a FLAC file played over most Bluetooth connections gains little over a high-bitrate MP3.

Why people still choose FLAC

FLAC is the right format for archiving. If you rip CDs or buy music downloads, keeping FLAC means you can always convert to any other format later without stacking losses. It also supports hi-res audio at 24-bit depth and high sample rates, and stores tags and cover art.

MP3 is the right format when you need small files and universal playback, such as in older cars, cheap players, or a phone with limited storage.

Questions

Is FLAC better than MP3?

FLAC is lossless, so it's technically better. In practice, a 320 kbps MP3 sounds the same to most people.

Can I convert MP3 to FLAC to improve quality?

No. The file gets bigger, but the detail MP3 removed doesn't come back.

Does iPhone play FLAC?

Yes. The Files app and many music apps play FLAC, though Apple Music uses ALAC for lossless.

How much space does FLAC take?

Roughly 25 to 35 MB for a typical 4-minute song at CD quality, versus about 9 MB for a 320 kbps MP3.
