About MOV Files
MOV is the video format of Apple's QuickTime. iPhones record MOV files, as do many cameras and Mac screen recordings. MP4 was actually based on MOV, so the two are closely related and often hold the same codecs, such as H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio. MOV can also hold professional codecs such as ProRes. Windows plays most MOV files, but HEVC recordings from iPhones may need the HEVC Video Extensions.
How to Open a MOV File
- Mac
- Open it in QuickTime Player.
- Windows
- Play it in Media Player or VLC. Install HEVC Video Extensions if you see no picture.
- iPhone & Android
- Plays in Photos on iPhone. On Android use Google Photos or VLC.
MOV File Questions
Is MOV better than MP4?
They're nearly identical containers. MP4 is more widely supported, especially on websites and Android.
How do I stop my iPhone recording in HEVC?
Go to Settings, Camera, Formats and choose Most Compatible. Videos will use H.264, which plays everywhere.
