About M4V Files
M4V is Apple's variant of MP4, used for films and TV episodes from the iTunes Store and for videos exported from some Apple apps. It can include chapters, multiple audio tracks, subtitles and, for store purchases, FairPlay DRM. DRM-protected M4V files only play in Apple's apps on authorised devices. M4V files without DRM are essentially MP4 and play in most players; renaming them to .mp4 often works.
How to Open an M4V File
- Mac
- Open it in the TV app or QuickTime Player.
- Windows
- Play DRM-free files in VLC or Media Player. Purchased videos need the Apple TV app.
- iPhone & Android
- Use the TV app on iPhone or VLC on Android for DRM-free files.
M4V File Questions
Is M4V the same as MP4?
Almost. M4V can add Apple's DRM. Without DRM, an M4V plays like an MP4.
Why won't my M4V play in VLC?
It's probably a purchase protected by Apple's DRM, which only plays in Apple's apps.
