About PKG Files
A PKG file installs software on a Mac using Apple's Installer app. It's used when an app needs to put files in several places or run setup steps, unlike a simple app you drag to Applications. macOS checks that packages are signed and notarised by a registered developer before installing. PS4 and PS5 game files also use the .pkg extension, but those are a different format.
How to Open a PKG File
- Mac
- Double-click to run the Installer. Right-click and choose Open if macOS blocks an unsigned package you trust.
- Windows
- Mac packages don't install on Windows. 7-Zip can list some contents.
PKG File Questions
Why does my Mac say the package can't be opened?
It isn't from an identified developer. If you trust it, right-click, choose Open, or allow it in System Settings, Privacy & Security.
How do I see what a PKG installs?
In the Installer, choose File, Show Files, or use a tool such as Suspicious Package.
