About DMG Files
DMG files are disk images that macOS mounts like a virtual drive. Most Mac apps downloaded from the web come as a DMG: you open it, drag the app into the Applications folder, then eject the disk image. DMGs can be compressed, encrypted and signed. They are only meant for Macs; Windows can't run the apps inside, although 7-Zip can extract some DMG files to look at their contents.
How to Open a DMG File
- Mac
- Double-click to mount it, drag the app to Applications, then eject it in Finder.
- Windows
- 7-Zip can extract many DMG files, but the Mac apps inside won't run on Windows.
