About MTS Files
MTS files come from camcorders that record in the AVCHD format, used by many Sony, Panasonic and Canon models from the late 2000s and 2010s. They contain H.264 video in an MPEG transport stream. On the camera's card they sit in a folder structure, PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM, along with other files that hold dates and clip information. Blu-ray discs use the same format with the .m2ts extension.
How to Open an MTS File
- Windows
- Play it in Media Player or VLC.

MTS File Questions
How do I convert MTS to MP4?
HandBrake converts MTS to MP4. Because the video is already H.264, FFmpeg can also copy it into MP4 without quality loss.
Where are my camcorder videos on the SD card?
Look in PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM. On a Mac, the AVCHD folder appears as a single package; right-click and choose Show Package Contents.
