About LNK Files
LNK files are Windows shortcuts, like the icons on your desktop. They contain the path to a file, folder or program, plus settings such as the icon and start folder. Windows hides the .lnk extension even when other extensions are shown. Deleting a shortcut doesn't delete the target. Shortcuts sent by email or in ZIP files can be used to run malicious commands, so don't open unexpected ones.
How to Open an LNK File
- Windows
- Double-click to open the target. Right-click and choose Properties to see where it points.
- Mac & Linux
- LNK files don't work there; the target only exists on the original PC.
LNK File Questions
Why doesn't my shortcut work on another computer?
It points to a file on the original computer. Copy the actual file instead.
Is it safe to delete LNK files?
Yes. Deleting a shortcut doesn't affect the program or file it points to.
