About EPS Files
EPS is an older graphics format built on Adobe's PostScript printing language. It can contain vector artwork, images and text, and was for decades the standard way to send logos and illustrations to printers and publishers. Many brands still supply their logos as EPS files. Today PDF and SVG have largely replaced it, and some apps have dropped EPS support because PostScript code can be a security risk. To use an EPS on the web, convert it to SVG or PNG.
How to Open an EPS File
- Windows
- Open it in Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Inkscape or Affinity Designer.
- Mac
- Illustrator and Affinity Designer open EPS files. Preview no longer opens them on macOS Ventura and later.
- Any device
- Upload it to an online viewer only if the file isn't confidential.
EPS File Questions
Why can't Preview open my EPS file anymore?
Apple removed PostScript support from Preview in macOS Ventura. Use Illustrator, Affinity Designer or Inkscape instead.
Is EPS a vector or raster format?
It can be both. Most logo files are vector, but an EPS can also simply wrap a raster image.
