About DOCX Files
DOCX has been Microsoft Word's default format since 2007. Inside, a DOCX file is a ZIP archive containing XML files for the text, styles and settings, plus folders for any images, which is why DOCX files are smaller and less likely to be corrupted than old DOC files. It is an international standard, so LibreOffice, Google Docs, Apple Pages and many other apps open and save it. Complex layouts can shift slightly between apps, so send a PDF when the exact appearance matters. Files with macros use the related .docm extension.

DOCX File Questions
How can I open a DOCX file for free?
Use Word on the web, Google Docs, LibreOffice or Apple Pages. All are free.
Why does my DOCX look different on another computer?
Usually because a font isn't installed there, or a different app laid out the page. Send a PDF if the layout must stay exactly the same.
Can I get a blank DOCX file?
Yes. The Blank Word Document tool on this site creates an empty .docx file instantly in your browser.
