About 3GP Files
3GP was designed for recording and sending video on early 3G mobile phones. It is based on the same container as MP4 and holds low-resolution video with AMR or AAC audio to keep files tiny for slow networks and small storage. Old phone videos from the 2000s are often 3GP. VLC plays them, and many modern phones still do, but quality is low by today's standards.
How to Open a 3GP File
- Windows & Mac
- Play it in VLC. QuickTime plays some 3GP files.
- iPhone & Android
- Android plays most 3GP files natively. Use VLC on iPhone.
3GP File Questions
How do I convert 3GP to MP4?
Use HandBrake or VLC. Because the containers are related, conversion is quick.
Why do my old phone videos look so blurry?
3GP videos were often recorded at 176×144 or 320×240 pixels to save space.
