ZIP vs RAR vs 7Z

All three bundle files into one compressed archive. They differ in compression, security and how easily other people can open them.

Compression

ZIP usually uses the Deflate algorithm from the early 1990s, which is fast but not the most efficient. RAR's compression is typically a bit better, and 7Z's LZMA2 is usually the best of the three, especially for text, documents and software, where 7Z archives can be noticeably smaller than ZIPs.

The differences shrink to almost nothing for photos, videos, music and PDFs. Those files are already compressed, so no archive format can make them much smaller. If you're zipping a folder of JPGs, choose the format for compatibility, not compression.

Compatibility

ZIP is the clear winner. Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, ChromeOS and Linux all open ZIP files natively, and countless apps read and write them. Many other formats, including DOCX, XLSX, EPUB and APK, are ZIP files inside.

Windows 11 added native support for extracting RAR and 7Z in 2023, but macOS, iPhones and older Windows versions still need an app such as 7-Zip, The Unarchiver or Keka. If you send a RAR or 7Z, some recipients will struggle to open it.

Security

For confidential files, encryption strength matters. ZIP's original ZipCrypto password protection is weak and can be broken. ZIP also supports AES-256 encryption, but Windows' built-in extractor can't open AES-encrypted ZIPs, and file names are always visible. RAR and 7Z both use AES-256 and can encrypt the file names too, so nobody can see what's inside without the password.

Which should you use?

Sending files to colleagues, clients or family? Use ZIP. Backing up or archiving large amounts of text or software where size matters? Use 7Z. Storing archives on unreliable media where you might need to repair damage? RAR's recovery records can help, though keeping a second backup is a better strategy.

Questions

Is RAR better than ZIP?

RAR compresses slightly better and adds recovery records, but ZIP opens everywhere without extra software.

Can a Mac open RAR or 7Z files?

Not with built-in tools. Install The Unarchiver or Keka, both free.

Is 7-Zip free?

Yes. 7-Zip is free and open source. Download it only from 7-zip.org.

Why didn't zipping make my files smaller?

Photos, videos, music and PDFs are already compressed, so archiving them saves little space.
