About SYS Files
SYS files are mostly device drivers, the software that lets Windows talk to hardware such as graphics cards, keyboards and network adapters. Some, like pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys, are large system files Windows uses for memory and hibernation. They aren't meant to be opened, and deleting or moving them can stop Windows from starting.
How to Open an SYS File
- Windows
- Don't open or delete SYS files. Update drivers through Windows Update or the hardware maker's site.
SYS File Questions
Can I delete pagefile.sys or hiberfil.sys?
Not directly. Turn off hibernation with powercfg /h off, or change virtual memory settings, and Windows removes them.
Why does a SYS file cause a blue screen?
A faulty or outdated driver. Update it or roll it back in Device Manager.
