About SRT Files
SRT is the most common subtitle format. Each subtitle has a number, a start and end time in hours, minutes, seconds and milliseconds, and the text to show. Because it's plain text, you can edit it in any editor. Video players such as VLC load an SRT automatically when it has the same name as the video file, and YouTube and most video editors accept SRT uploads.
How to Open an SRT File
- Any device
- Open it in a text editor to read or edit it.
- Windows & Mac
- Name it like the video (film.mp4 and film.srt) and play the video in VLC, or use Subtitles, Add Subtitle File.
SRT File Questions
How do I fix subtitles that are out of sync?
In VLC, press H and G to shift subtitles during playback, or use Subtitle Edit to shift all timings permanently.
Why do subtitles show strange characters?
The SRT was saved in an older encoding. Re-save it as UTF-8 in a text editor.
