About PSD Files
PSD is Photoshop's working format. It keeps everything you need to keep editing: separate layers, masks, text that can still be changed, adjustment layers, effects, guides and colour profiles. That makes PSD files much larger than a finished JPG or PNG. Designers usually share the PSD with other designers and export a flattened JPG or PNG for everyone else. Files bigger than 2 GB or 30,000 pixels use the related .psb format instead.
How to Open a PSD File
- Windows & Mac
- Open it in Adobe Photoshop for full editing. Affinity Photo, GIMP and Photopea (in a browser) open most PSDs with their layers.
- Mac
- Preview and Quick Look show a flattened preview of the image.
- iPhone & Android
- Photoshop Express or Google Drive can show a preview.
PSD File Questions
Can I open a PSD without Photoshop?
Yes. GIMP and Affinity Photo open PSD files, and Photopea opens them in a web browser. Complex effects may not look exactly the same.
How do I turn a PSD into a JPG?
In Photoshop choose File, Export, Export As, and pick JPG. On a Mac you can also open it in Preview and use File, Export.
