About KMZ Files
KMZ is a ZIP archive containing a KML file, usually named doc.kml, plus any images, icons or models it refers to. Compressing makes it smaller and keeps everything in one file. Google Earth opens KMZ directly. Because it's a ZIP, you can extract the KML from it with any unzip tool if another app only accepts KML.

Why won't Google Maps open my KMZ?
Google Maps itself doesn't open files. Import it into Google My Maps, then view the map in Google Maps.
