About JAR Files
A JAR file is a ZIP archive of compiled Java classes, resources and a manifest. Some JARs are runnable programs, such as Minecraft mods, server software or tools, and others are libraries used by Java projects. To run one, you need Java installed. Like any program, only run JARs from sources you trust.
How to Open a JAR File
- Windows
- Install Java, then double-click the JAR or run java -jar file.jar.
- Any device
- Extract it like a ZIP to see the contents.
JAR File Questions
Why doesn't my JAR open when I double-click?
Java may not be installed, or another app is set to open JAR files. Try java -jar file.jar in a terminal.
Is a JAR file safe?
It's a program, so only run it if you trust the developer.
