About APK Files
An APK file contains an Android app: its code, resources and manifest, signed by the developer. The Play Store installs apps for you, but you can also install APKs from other sources, called sideloading, after allowing it in settings. Sideloaded APKs can contain malware, so only install them from developers you trust. Apps on the Play Store are now published as app bundles, which Google turns into split APKs for each device. An APK is a ZIP archive inside.
How to Open an APK File
- Android
- Tap the file and allow installs from that app when asked.
- Windows & Mac
- APKs don't run on desktops. Android Studio's emulator can install them for testing.
APK File Questions
Is it safe to install an APK?
Only from a source you trust. Play Protect scans sideloaded apps, but it can't catch everything.
Can I install an APK on an iPhone?
No. iPhones only run iOS apps, distributed as IPA files.
