About HEIF Files
HEIF is a container format for images and image sequences, standardised by the Moving Picture Experts Group. It can store a single photo, a burst of shots or a short animation, along with depth maps, thumbnails and metadata. Files using HEVC compression are usually saved as .heic, while the .heif extension is used by some Android phones, Samsung and Sony cameras, and files using other compression types. Support is similar to HEIC: built into Apple devices and recent Android, but Windows needs a free extension.
