About AVIF Files
AVIF stores images compressed with the AV1 video codec inside a HEIF container. It typically makes files about half the size of a JPG at the same visual quality, and noticeably smaller than WebP, while also supporting transparency, HDR, wide colour and animation. It is royalty-free, which helped it spread quickly: Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari all display AVIF, and many large websites and image CDNs now serve it. Encoding AVIF is slow compared with JPG, and some desktop software still can't open it.

- Mac
- Preview opens AVIF files on macOS Ventura and later.
- iPhone & Android
- iOS 16 and Android 12 and later show AVIF images.
- Any device
- Drag the file into Chrome
