About CBR Files
A CBR file is a RAR archive of page images, used for digital comics in the same way as CBZ. Comic reader apps open it and show the pages in order. Because RAR is a proprietary format, fewer tools can create CBR files than CBZ, and some files labelled .cbr are actually ZIP archives inside. Rename a copy to .rar to extract the images with an archive tool such as 7-Zip.
How to Open a CBR File
- Windows
- Use CDisplayEx, YACReader or SumatraPDF, or extract it with 7-Zip.
- Mac
- Use YACReader or Simple Comic, or extract it with The Unarchiver.
- iPhone & Android
- Use Chunky, Panels or CDisplayEx.
CBR File Questions
What's the difference between CBR and CBZ?
CBR uses RAR compression and CBZ uses ZIP. The pages inside are the same kind of images.
Why does my CBR open as a ZIP?
Some comic files are misnamed. The File Info tool on this site tells you whether the file is really RAR or ZIP.
