About XLSM Files
XLSM is the same as XLSX, with one difference: it can store VBA macros, small programs that automate tasks in the workbook. Excel uses a separate extension so you can see at a glance that a file contains code. Macros can be useful, but they are also a common way to spread malware, so Excel disables them in downloaded files until you choose to allow them. Only enable macros in workbooks from people you trust.
How to Open an XLSM File
- Windows & Mac
- Open it in Microsoft Excel. LibreOffice Calc opens it too, but runs macros differently.
- Any device
- Google Sheets opens the data but ignores the macros.
XLSM File Questions
Is it safe to enable macros in an XLSM file?
Only if you trust where it came from. Malicious macros can install malware or steal data.
How do I remove macros from an XLSM?
Save a copy as Excel Workbook (.xlsx). Excel drops the macros and keeps the data and formatting.
