About WebM Files
WebM is a royalty-free video format designed for the web. It holds VP8, VP9 or AV1 video with Vorbis or Opus audio, in a container based on Matroska. YouTube uses VP9 and AV1 streams, and browser screen recorders often save WebM. Every major browser plays WebM, and Safari has supported it since 2021, but many video editors, phones' gallery apps and older TVs don't.
How to Open a WebM File
- Any device
- Drag it into Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari.
- Windows
- Media Player plays WebM on Windows 10 and 11, or use VLC.
- Mac
- Use VLC or IINA, or open it in Safari or Chrome.
WebM File Questions
Why won't my video editor import WebM?
Many editors only accept MP4 or MOV. Convert it with HandBrake or FFmpeg first.
Is WebM better than MP4?
WebM is open and royalty-free and makes small files with VP9 or AV1. MP4 is supported by many more devices and apps.
