About TMP Files
TMP files are created by programs to hold data temporarily, for example while you edit a document, install software or download a file. They're normally deleted automatically when the program closes, but crashes can leave them behind. A TMP file usually has no fixed format; it depends on the program that made it. Word's temporary files sometimes contain lost work that can be recovered.
How to Open a TMP File
- Windows
- You usually don't need to. To clean up, use Settings, System, Storage, Temporary files.
- Any device
- Check its real type with the File Info tool, then rename it with the right extension if it's a document or image.
