About TGZ Files
TGZ is a short form of .tar.gz: a TAR archive of files and folders compressed with gzip. The shorter extension dates from systems that only allowed one dot or three-letter extensions. npm packages, many software downloads and backup tools use .tgz. Extract it exactly as you would a .tar.gz file.
How to Open a TGZ File
- Mac & Linux
- Double-click it, or run tar -xzf file.tgz.
- Windows
- Windows 11 opens it in File Explorer. Otherwise use 7-Zip or tar -xzf in Command Prompt.
TGZ File Questions
Is TGZ the same as TAR.GZ?
Yes. They are the same format with different extensions.
Why does 7-Zip show a .tar after extracting a TGZ?
7-Zip removes the gzip layer first, leaving the TAR. Open the .tar to get the files.
