About Opus Files
Opus is a modern, royalty-free audio codec that handles both speech and music well, even at very low bitrates. It is used by WhatsApp and Telegram voice messages, Discord, Zoom, WebRTC video calls and YouTube. Opus audio is usually stored in an Ogg container, with the .opus or .ogg extension. Browsers and Android play it natively, but many desktop media players, older iPhones and car stereos don't, so converting to MP3 is the easiest way to share a voice note.
How to Open an Opus File
- Windows & Mac
- Play it in VLC, or drag it into Chrome, Firefox or Edge.
- iPhone & Android
- Android plays Opus natively. iOS 17 and later play it in Files; otherwise use VLC.

Opus is very efficient. Speech sounds clear at 16 to 32 kbps, a fraction of a typical MP3.
