About JFIF Files
JFIF is the standard layout used inside most JPEG files, so a .jfif file is simply a JPEG image with an unusual extension. Windows sometimes saves images from the web as .jfif because of a registry setting, which confuses websites and apps that only accept .jpg. The picture data is identical, so converting to JPG loses nothing, and often renaming the file from .jfif to .jpg works too. A .jfif file opens anywhere a JPG does once the app recognises the extension.
How to Open a JFIF File
- Windows
- Open it in Photos or Paint.
- Mac
- Preview opens it; if not
- Any device
- Drag the file into a browser tab.
JFIF File Questions
Why does Chrome save images as JFIF?
A Windows registry setting maps the image/jpeg type to .jfif. Chrome follows it. The image is a normal JPEG, so you can rename or convert it to .jpg.
Is it safe to rename .jfif to .jpg?
Yes. The data inside is JPEG, so renaming works in almost every case. Converting re-saves the file as a standard .jpg if renaming isn't enough.
