About CAF Files
CAF is Apple's flexible audio container. It can hold almost any audio codec, including uncompressed audio, AAC and Apple Lossless, and has no file size limit, unlike WAV and AIFF, which top out at 4 GB. App developers use CAF for sound effects in iOS apps, and macOS and iOS sometimes produce CAF files for recordings and sounds. Outside Apple software, support is limited.
How to Open a CAF File
- Mac
- Open it in QuickTime Player, Music or any audio editor.
- Windows
- Play it in VLC or Audacity.
CAF File Questions
How do I convert CAF to MP3?
On a Mac, open it in an app such as Music or Audacity and export it. Many CAF files also open in VLC, which can convert them.
Why do some CAF files not play in browsers?
Browsers generally don't support the CAF container, even if the audio inside is a supported codec.
